Born in New York City, Doug is the son of Linda Joan Chitel (née Oumano) and Robert Chitel, a well-known men's apparel executive. He spent his entire childhood in Old Tappan, New Jersey, where he was raised alongside his brother, David. He is a third generation American with ancestry stemming mostly from Turkey, Greece, and Ukraine.
Doug graduated from Northern Valley Regional High School before attending and graduating from Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, Massachusetts, where he majored in International Relations. While at Tufts, he spent a semester studying in Seville, Spain, where he lived in the Los Remedios neighborhood.
His post-college performance and vocal training is eclectic and includes New York-based programs like The Barrow Group and studios led by founding members of Atlantic Theater Company.
